Why have a French birth certificate recognised in the United Kingdom?
A French birth certificate is an essential document for a multitude of procedures in the United Kingdom. Yet a document issued by a French town hall is not automatically accepted by British administrations. Depending on the intended use, it will need to be translated, sometimes apostilled, and presented in a specific format.
The most frequent situations where a French birth certificate is required in the UK:
- Marriage or civil partnership in the UK: the register office requires a recent, translated birth certificate.
- Settled Status / immigration: proof of identity and filiation.
- School or university enrolment: proof of the child's age and identity.
- Succession or notarial procedure: establishing filiation.
- Account opening, employment, various administrative requests.
Step 1 — Obtain a recent birth certificate
First rule: British administrations generally require a certificate less than 3 months old (sometimes 6). An old certificate kept in your archives will not suffice. You must request a recent copy.
For people born in France, the request is made free of charge from the town hall of the place of birth, or online via the French public service. For French citizens born abroad, the Service central d'état civil in Nantes issues the certificates.
Preferably request a full copy (copie intégrale, not a simple extract), as it contains all the marginal notes and is better accepted for official procedures.
Step 2 — Certified translation
This is the key step, and the most often misunderstood. A birth certificate in French must be accompanied by a certified translation into English to be accepted by most British administrations.
Beware: not all translations are equal. The UK generally requires a translation done by a professional translator who certifies its accuracy, with their contact details and the date. A translation done by a relative, even a bilingual one, will be rejected. This is precisely the kind of certified translation we provide.
Step 3 — Is an apostille needed?
It all depends on the use. Here's the practical rule:
- Routine administrative use (marriage, school, bank account): a certified translation generally suffices, without apostille.
- Reinforced legal or official use (notarial procedure, certain immigration steps, court file): a French apostille may be required on the original certificate before translation.
The apostille of a French certificate is obtained from the court of appeal covering the issuing town hall. If your British procedure requires it, you must therefore anticipate it on the French side before sending the document to the UK.
The reverse direction: a British certificate for France
The symmetrical situation is just as frequent: having a British birth certificate recognised in France. In that case, an FCDO apostille is required (the UK and France both being Hague signatories), accompanied by a certified translation into French. It's one of our most common corridors.
Common mistakes
- Presenting too old a certificate: request a recent copy before any procedure.
- Uncertified translation: a "home-made" translation is almost always rejected.
- Forgetting the apostille when required: check the exact requirement of the destination administration before starting the translation.
- Confusing extract and full copy: favour the full copy for official uses.
