What the FCDO does
The UK Legalisation Office can legalise eligible UK-origin documents, checking the relevant signatures, seals or stamps against its records and issuing an apostille when requirements are met.
The FCDO cannot legalise documents issued outside the UK. French-issued records must be handled through the competent authorities for their country of issue.
Does every UK document for France need an apostille?
Not necessarily. The correct route depends on the document and intended use. Ask the French notaire, bank or public body receiving it what they require before paying for legalisation.
Private documents may need prior solicitor or notarial certification, while some public records follow a different procedure. A translation and apostille serve different purposes.
Three questions before ordering
Which exact document is involved? Who in France will receive it? Do they specifically ask for apostille, translation, a certified copy or a defined combination?
Get the answer in writing, especially for matters involving several professional advisers.
Key takeaway. Confirm the receiving organisation’s exact requirements before paying for apostille or certification.
